Light Rail Train Strikes Pedestrians in Seattle, Killing 2 and Injuring 1 This Month

KIRO 7 News reported on July 28, 2021 that a man in Seattle’s Chinatown-International District is in critical condition after being struck by a Sound Transit Train. The man was transported to the hospital while the investigation continues. This incident comes just weeks after a report by KING 5 News on the death of two pedestrians – a 76 year-old woman and a 66 year-old man – after they were struck while crossing the street by a light rail train near Martin Luther King Jr. Way South and South Alaska Street. The incident occurred on July 2, 2021.

We are devastated to hear of two major collisions involving our light rail system within the span of one month. While police say the victims of the July 2nd incident had been crossing during a “Don’t Walk” signal, there have been ongoing concerns regarding the light rail in these areas, and additional safety measures that may be deployed. Many residents in Seattle continue to choose walking as a convenient and cost-efficient way to get around, and as the community continues to open back up more and more people are moving throughout the city. Pedestrians have the same rights to the roads as moving vehicles; thus, there must be significant implementation of safety measures protecting walkers while they share the road, now more than ever.
