John Louis Acken is a Partner in the South Sound offices of GLP Attorneys and has been exclusively representing victims of personal injury for over twenty-two years.  Over his career, John has successfully recovered over $62,000,000 in jury verdicts and settlements for his clients.  Prior to joining GLP Attorneys in 2015, John practiced personal injury law as a partner at the law firm of Howell & Thornhill, P.A. in Winter Haven, Florida.

John graduated from the University of Florida and earned his Juris Doctorate with Honors from Drake University Law School. While in law school, he was a member of Law Review and on the National Mock Trial Team.  He began his legal career as an Assistant Public Defender for the 10th Judicial Circuit in Polk County, Florida, where he served as a Felony Trial Division Chief Attorney.

John is admitted to practice in the states of Washington, Florida, Maine, and New Hampshire. Since 2008, he has been Board Certified by the Florida Bar as an Expert in Civil Trial Law, which is the highest level of recognition by The Florida Bar of the competency and experience of attorneys in the areas of law approved for certification by the Florida Supreme Court.

John is active in the community and has been a member of Rotary International over 20 years. He is a past Member of the Board of Directors of the Haines City Rotary Club and is a current member of the Gig Harbor Midday Rotary Club.

When not working, John enjoys spending time outdoors, boating, skiing, running, hiking, swimming, and traveling with his wife and children.

Successful Cases:


$3,576,000 settlement in a defective roadway design case.  A pedestrian was walking at night on a flooded roadway and was struck by an oncoming vehicle.  The driver did not see the pedestrian until impact.  The roadway had no sidewalks, had insufficient lighting, and was not properly maintained by the city.  As a result, the roadway flooded during rain and forced the pedestrian into the roadway, where she was hit head-on and suffered catastrophic injuries.

$2,400,000 verdict for a motorcyclist who was struck by a drunk driver and suffered multiple fractures, surgeries, and coma lasting 58 days.

$2,300,000 settlement for a family of three who were involved in a severe head-on collision.  All three victims required prolonged hospitalization for their fractured limbs, internal injuries, pulmonary embolism, multiple surgeries, and significant permanent facial scarring.

$1,000,000 settlement for a rear-end motor vehicle collision.  A mother and son were rear-ended by a semi-tractor-trailer on the I-5 bridge from Portland, Oregon to Vancouver, Washington. As a result of the collision, the mother suffered a neck injury that required a two-level cervical fusion surgery.  Her son suffered injuries to his spine and a traumatic brain injury.

$500,000 settlement for man who suffered knee surgery and post traumatic reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome (RSDS) following an automobile accident.

$450,000 settlement for a woman who was struck by a semi tractor-trailer that ran a red light in the fog and resulted in cervical and lumbar fusion.

$410,000 for an elderly woman who was involved in a rear-end collision which necessitated anterior cervical discectomy and fusion surgery and resulted in a post-surgical anterior wound hematoma with displacement of the trachea.

$375,000 settlement for woman who required cervical fusion and knee surgery following a motor vehicle accident.

$350,000 settlement for slip and fall on a city sidewalk.  A woman was walking with her husband along a city sidewalk when she approached a portion of the walkway that had a hidden danger, a sudden drop in elevation that was not marked or painted to warn pedestrians of the dangerous condition. The presence of this condition had been known to both the city and the adjacent property owner for many years.  Yet, no repairs were ever performed and no warning signs were ever installed.  The woman fractured her nose, multiple facial bones, and suffered a traumatic brain injury.

$325,000 settlement for a slip and fall caused by a defective stairway.  A woman was dropping off her recyclable materials at the county recycling center when the broken handrail of the stairway leading to the containers gave way and caused her to fall down the stairs.  Her injuries included an aggravation of a prior cervical injury and required surgery to repair and replace a spinal cord stimulator.

$275,000.00 for a 23-year old student who was involved in a side-swipe collision that resulted in a concussion, traumatic brain injury, and whiplash injuries.

$253,000 settlement for a man who was involved in a collision caused by a drunk driver resulting in lung contusions, fractured ribs, fractured clavicle, and lumbar sprain/strain injuries.

$250,000.00 policy limit settlement for a woman who suffered seizures following a T-Bone motor vehicle collision.
