A frequently asked question is "How much can a medical provider charge for searching and duplicating medical records requests from attorneys and insurance companies?" Effective July 1, 2007, through June 30, 2009, RCW 70.02.010(15) allows medical providers to charge no more than ninety-six cents per page for the first thirty pages; and no more than seventy-three cents per page for all other pages. The provider can also charge a twenty-two dollar clerical fee for searching and handling the records. If the provider personally edits confidential information from the records, as may be required by statute, the provider can charge the usual fee for a basic office visit. Please keep in mind other requirements for handling and copying records as specified by HIPAA regulations.
