Walking is great exercise and good for your health. Unfortunately, it can also be dangerous due to the negligence of some motor vehicle drivers. Typically, the most severe injuries sustained in traffic accidents involve pedestrians since they are completely exposed when hit by a car or other moving vehicle. Children are particularly at risk, particularly in the urban areas of Western Washington.
Some of the most common injuries suffered by pedestrians hit by a car are head and brain injuries, broken bones and internal injuries. There were 4,749 pedestrian fatalities in 2003, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Thousands more are injured every year.
